DIY baby footprint ornament

DIY Christmas present babyThis year, we’re going to give these ornaments to both grandmas for Christmas. If you’re interested to know how we made it, read this post. It’s not easy to make a print of a hyper baby’s foot, but I realised how to make it work!

What you will need:

  • modelling clay (air dry type)
  • rolling pin
  • cutting board
  • knife
  • glass bowl
  • parchment paper
  • drinking straw
  • acrylic paint
  • ribbon (organza or satin)
  • baby wipes
  • paper towels
  • highchair
  • baby
  • the favourite snack of said baby

I sat Janka in her highchair and unbuttoned her pj’s on her feet.

I cut an approximately 5×10 cm piece from the clay and rolled it on a cutting board to a rough circle shape. Its thickness was about 0.5 cm.

sat opposite Janka, gave her quite a few pieces of her favourite strawberry flavoured corn snack and wiped one of her feet with a baby wipe to make sure it was lint-free, then dried it with a paper towel. I placed the cutting board with the clay onto my thighs, grabbed Janka’s ankle and pushed her foot firmly into the clay. In order to achieve the best result, I pushed her toes one by one into the clay. I removed the clay residue from her feet using a baby wipe, then repeated the same procedure with her other foot: snack, wipe, print, wipe.

I cut the clay to a circle shape with a glass bowl. I used the bowl as if it was a cookie cutter. I cut the hole for the ribbon with a drinking straw.

I lined a plate with some parchment paper, placed the still wet ornament on it and let it dry for two days.

Once it was completely dry, I painted the footprints with some acrylic paint in silver colour, using a small brush, and threaded a lavender colour organza ribbon into the hole and tied a knot in its ends.

    1. They grow so quickly! The first reason I made this ornament was similar to what you wrote: it will be nice to look at how small she was. The second reason was that my mother-in-law sees my daughter three times a year and I wanted to give her something more physical than a photo – if that makes sense.
